I just installed xfce4-dev-tools for ARM platform and am getting ready to try and build the pulseaudio panel plugin that appears to be missing in Jessie. It'd be nice if the xfce developers would make a deb package for it and get it in the repositories though. I need pulseaudio-modules-bluetooth for BT headphones and speakers so uninstalling pulseaudio really isn't an option. In fact, I'm pretty sure many people opt for a diiferent DE instead of doing that. LXDE in Raspbian has no issues with pulseaudio.

It's not Xfce devs responsibility to produce packages for any distro. That is the job of the distro.

that's why i said it'd be nice if they did. Might even make this place more popular. They obviously need help over in Debian-land and it would trickle down to other Debian-based distros... but what do I know.
In any case, I built the needed package myself after spending half the day looking for armhf dependency packages. Unfortunately, it would appear the panel plugin requires xfce4.12 and Debian "stable" is xfce4.10 so I guess my only choice is to go "unstable" if I really want to make pulseaudio work.
Seems like a lot of effort to get the sound unmuted. I'm sure me having sound isn't anyone's responsibility here though.
EDIT: Found an easy hack on another site, just remove xfce4-mixer from the loop. You can't uninstall it but in Settings Editor you can specify pavucontrol as an alternate. Problem solved for now I guess.

Well, I upgraded above image to kernel 4.1 and am in the process of upgrading it to xfce4.12 from "stretch"/unstable sources. Last attempt at upgrading failed because I believe the new panel uses compositing by default and the Pi doesn't like that. Despite the seemingly minor version change from 4.10 to 4.12 the panel itself went from 1.0 to 2.0, so it's really a major update.
If this doesn't work you'll just have to wait for the Xubuntu guys to make a Pi version because I'm giving up... they've got the pulseaudio plugin in their 4.12 repository but unfortunately none of that work trickled back up to Debian itself. Seems like it's a one-way street in that regard.

OK, this is the final beta.

Beta2 image is:
1.8 GB
Debian "stretch" (unstable)
Kernel 4.1.6
XFCE 4.12
I'll try building the panel plugin again. First time was with 4.12 libraries on top of xfce 4.10 and I did get a couple complaints from the compiler. Hopefully it'll work out better this time. Quite frankly though, if I can figure out a way to make pulseaudio-module-bluetooth work with 4.10 I might go back to the Debian stable image.
Original beta image (first post in thread) is:
1.6 GB
Debian 8.1 "Jessie" (stable)
Kernel 3.18
XFCE 4.10

I decided to start over from scratch... with LXDE. Unfortuntely, whoever said the problem was PulseAudio was absolutey right. More specifically, newer version of PulseAudio on certain hardware starts muted. So removing xfce4-mixer from the equation didn't solve anything and quite frankly after using XFCE for a while changing to LXDE sucked. So I started over from scratch AGAIN.. with XFCE 3.10 and Debian 8.2 stable. My focus changed away from education however.

I just wanted to end this with a little ranting. It may seem like unproductive biatching to some but if past history is any indication it'll be YEARS before XFCE 4.12 makes it into Debian stable. Just a little coordination and it would be in there now... it's not just you peeps though. Ubuntu 14.04 is long-term unsupportable because Canonical couldn't wait a stinking week for kernel 3.14. Bluetooth doesn't work in 3.13 and it never will. FIVE YEAR support but they couldn't wait a week. Unfooking believable...
Rant over, I feel better now.
