I was given a Linux computer by a group in my area. Got it up and running with Internet but I want to root my Nexus 6 with it. Nothing is working. I'm following the instructions on this page and got all the files downloaded but cannot get anything to excute.
http://nexus5.wonderhowto.com/how-to/ro … x-0158751/
When I click to excute nothing happens. It sounds like it's working but nothing happens. No screen or errors, nothing. I have contacted the group that gave it to me but I've read that the program that gave away the computers isn't active anymore.
XFCE Version 4.8. I don't know what version of Debian I'm on but I did a bunch of updates so maybe it's the newest.?

Frankly, I don't see that this has much to do with this Forum...
But in any case, the first thing I would do is to run this to find out which Debian you have:
cat /etc/debian_version
If the Debian version is the current stable (version 8), then I would install from the repos inxi and run
inxi -F
to see my machine's specs. If an earlier version, you can do a websearch using something like "<Debian version> inxi install."
Once you have that info, then you can try to move forward.

Wow. Sorry to ask a question here. Thought maybe it was a problem with XFCE.

Not a problem, I was just giving you a quick reaction to the role of Xfce--sorry if it came across as harsher than I meant it.
I tried to provide you with some pointers about how to move forward that I thought would be helpful. Once you have that information, you can repost with it so we are in a better position to judge whether the problem lies in fact with Xfce.

Version of Debian is 7.8. Newest version is 8.1. Looks like I'll be needing to figure out how to get the newest version. You need to remember that I was given this computer with one page of very basic instructions.
The reason I was thinking that it might be a XFCE problem is that I click on a file to excute in file manager and nothing happens. If I try the "Open With Other Applications" there's no recommended application to open it with. That just doesn't make sense to me.

Does this happen with any file or only one specific file? If it is one specific file, what kind of file is it?

It's not opening *.sh files.

Which version of Thunar do you have?
Thunar -V
In version 1.6.5, the ability to execute shell scripts was removed (See: http://git.xfce.org/xfce/thunar/commit/ … 5c230d03bc).
In version 1.6.6, a hidden option was added to restore this functionality. (See: http://git.xfce.org/xfce/thunar/commit/ … 3a7d22347e). To enable the execution of shell scripts in Thunar 1.6.6 or above, you need to set "misc-exec-shell-scripts-by-default" to true.
More info here.

Thunar 1.2.3. in Xfce 4.8. It seems like this device has the older version of everything.
I got someone in that group willing to walk me though it. Looks like I'm going to have to update.
