I got this fixed once a while back but it has disappeared again and I can't seem to get it back. This makes it impossible to use the VPN. At least for my experience level. Can someone help me fix this?
Thanks

Make sure that nm-applet is running and that you have the notification tray or indicator applet added to your panel.
If that doesn't solve the problem, try running "nm-applet" in a terminal window to see which error messages you are getting.
BTW, which distro and which version of Xfce are you running?

OK, up until I just looked, the Indicator plugin was showing in the panel properties. However I did upgrade to Linux Mint 17.1 Rebecca yesterday. So now it was not there. I added it and the Network-Manager appeared. Great!
Are the power indicators I see for my mouse and keyboard provided through the Indicator plugin?
I did see some XF~ updates during the upgrade so maybe something got fixed.
How can I tell what the version of XFCE is?

I'm not sure. Try removing the indicator plugin and see if the icons disappear.

Run "xfce4-about" from a terminal window. You may also have an "About Xfce" menu item.
