Desktop manager is not active.

I'm running Xubuntu 14.04.1 with XFCE 4.10.

Just today I started having this little window come up right after login:

I don't know if this is a XFCE problem, or a Xubuntu problem. I thought I'd start here since it says "Desktop manager ... ". After login is complete everything seems to be okay. I don't know what caused this to come up. I think I installed some updates earlier today, but I don't remember what they were.

Any ideas?

Re: Desktop manager is not active.

Doesn't look like an Xfce dialog box that I've ever seen - probably from some program.

With that dialog up, open a terminal window and run:

xprop

...the cursor will change into a + sign. Click the mouse on that dialog.

In the terminal window, a bunch of information will display. The last bit referencing the WM strings might help to identify the program.

Which apps do you have set to autostart?

Re: Desktop manager is not active.

Your post made me think, so I checked in the autostart folder. I forgot that i had copied a .desktop file into there that was supposed to randomly change the wallpaper. I moved it out, that's what was doing it. I'll have to troubleshoot that a little more.

Thanks for the mind jogger.

Re: Desktop manager is not active.

I cannot help with your started problem, but for the "I can't remember what I installed/upgraded" one, run Synaptic Package Manager and select File / History. It lists installed, upgraded, and removed packages by date.

I've found SPM to be a very useful app, and the above is just one of the reasons why.

Wow! Thank you for that info, never knew about it.

Does that include packages installed by apt-get?
