Does CD autoplay work?

I tried using Settings Manager > Removable Drives and Media, Multimedia tab by checking the box next to "Play audio CDs when inserted" and using the command

/usr/bin/vlc

Logged out and back in, then rebooted but still no effect. Searched this forum on "autoplay" without succes, and also did a websearch on "xfce4 autoplay."

So: 1) Does it work? 2) If yes, should I use some other command?

Yes it works here. With vlc you need to specify the source:

/usr/bin/vlc cdda:///dev/cdrom

Thanks. That does not work here on a Debian Stable system, even if I shift to clementine or deadbeef (my favorite). I tried switching to /dev/sr0 but that didn't work either.

Will keep mucking around...

One advanced MX-14 user reports the following:

Both

vlc cdda:///dev/sr0

   
and

vlc cdda:///dev/cdrom

worked on my system, but thunar had to be open for the autostart to take place. Having the thunar daemon running in the background wasn't enough. Once Thunar had been open once, subsequent cd insertions work fine.

I can confirm that, except that only /dev/sr0 works on my system and Thunar must be open each time.

Seems clear that this is not something the Xfce devs intended, since the combination of 1) the lack of directions about the command required (the pull-down menu implies that only the player needs to be designated) and 2) the hidden requirement that Thunar be open for that to operate (only Debian?) renders CD Autoplay effectively unuseable for most people.

I don't have a system with a CD drive handy to test myself right now, but is thunar running in daemon mode?

ps -ef | grep -i thunar

If not, does starting thunar with:

thunar --daemon

...then closing thunar then inserting the CD make it autoplay?

From the thunar man page:

--daemon
           Do not terminate the Thunar instance when the last window is
           closed, but keep it running to speed up opening new windows later
           on. This is the default when spawning Thunar as part of the default
           Xfce session or when using D-Bus activation.

Yes

$ ps -ef | grep -i thunar

Perhaps a bug report is warranted - maybe get this fixed for the next release.

Could be. What makes me hesitate is that it seems increasingly to vary by hardware/system. Another MX-14 user has now reported this, for instance:

vlc cdda:///dev/sr0 works fine for me. I don't normally use Thunar, and I think I have only opened it on this install to disable auto-mounting of removable drives. I normally have SpaceFM open, but CD autoplay works whether it is open or not.

At which point, I begin to doubt if there is anything to be done except machine-by-machine.

Hmm. I'm back at my laptop with the cd drive and it (autoplay) actually works for me, on a fresh boot, without running thunar first. I do, however, have "Thunar --daemon" running on boot (it must be started automatically).

This laptop runs Arch linux with Xfce built from git, but Thunar is still at 1.6.3.

¿Maybe is a problem with Vlc? on my machine it works well with Parole using

parole --device=%d

Thanks. It hasn't mattered so far which player was used, but I will look at it some more. (I don't actually ever use this myself, but a question on the MX forum got me wondering.)

But again: some indication about how to form the command--or just automatically filling it out after the player had been selected--would make this option a lot more accessible to the general user.
