XFCE 4.10 Xubuntu-style on Debian Live CD

Hello all

I just wanted to let the XFCE community know of an installable Live CD that I have put together which basically 'ports' Xubuntu 14.04 to Debian Testing.

Why? Because I prefer the Debian base but I appreciate the effort that Xubuntu put into their desktop in terms of appearance and usability. There are quite a lot of themes and XFCE system settings that aren't yet in Debian, so I have pulled them off the web and installed them into Debian.

I also find a few that Debian's default XFCE install has too much reliance on Gnome 2 components. I wrote a tutorial on my blog on how to re-create the look using Debian as the base, then I decided I might as well spin an ISO to share with the wider community.

What you get is Debian Testing with the latest stable version of XFCE (4.10), plus plenty of graphical system setting tools. It has the latest Greybird GTK theme and Elementary icon set (again not available in Debian), uses lightdm and lightlocker (only currently available in Experimental) and basic apps to get you started. It features an installer put together by the team at Refracta Linux so if you like it you can install it to you hard drive.

It is called, wait for it, DebianXbluebuntu. It isn't a Distro, it is a respin. The Distro is firmly Debian!

For anyone who is interested, you can download it at Sourceforge:
https://sourceforge.net/projects/theme-ix/

I would genuinely appreciate some feedback, either here or on my blog or at Sourceforge.

My next mini-project will be to test and review some docks for use in XFCE. I will be adding my findings to the blog and possibly spinning an ISO featuring the best one.

Regards
RichJack

Thanks for sharing.

Xubuntu 14.04 runs Xfce 4.11, which I notice is available in Debian Experimental. Any thoughts on using 4.11 instead of 4.10? There are some nice fixes/enhancements in that version.

Hi ToZ

Yes, I will definitely look into 4.11 and maybe roll up another ISO in the future if it is stable enough. I kind of wanted to stay fairly stable with the initial release, but Debian Wheezy is just too far behind (4.8), although I did have to grab lightlocker out of experimental smile

Cheers

I am a SolydX user, but also a huge Xfce fan and try all the Xfce distros and respins I find.  I used Rufus from within Windows to make a live USB of your spin.  I'm writing on it now.  It looks very nice and seems faster than the Xubuntu 14 I have installed.  Come visit the SolydXK forum.  I mentioned you in the Other Distro Section.  http://forums.solydxk.com/viewtopic.php?f=26&t=4209

Hi there! First of all thanks for downloading my ISO and I'm really glad you like it. Second, thanks for posting over at SolydX - that's a fine distro. I'll pop over sometime, might be a bit more activity and it would be good to chat with other XFCE Debian users. smile

Re: XFCE 4.10 Xubuntu-style on Debian Live CD

Hi RichJack,

very interesting thing! Since LMDE is not anymore tracking Debian Testing and does not use XFCE anymore,
I am looking for an alterantive. Do you still maintain this project? Is there still an iso image for Debian Testing
with XFCE of Xubuntu?

Many thanks

Which is the reason why there is SolydXK: http://solydxk.com/about/solydxk/

Hi sixsixfive,

yes I know, but also SolydX is switching to Debian Stable and I am looking for a Debian Testing solution.
Thats why this stuff looks very promising to me.

oh, really? I guess it doesn't really matter since they are just a tasksel task(even xubuntu is just as tasksel task for ubuntu...) - anyway, ever tried? http://sparkylinux.org

PPS: I still prefer the debian net install to build my dream  system (=
