is there anything I can do to fix this?

Because looking nice is a subjective statement, which of those applications in your screenshot do you think look nice? You appear to have the Ubuntu Software Crentre open (a GTK3 app) and the menu editor (a GTK2 app).
If you search these forums, you'll find a number of threads about GTK2/GTK3 compatibility.
What Appearance theme and Window Manager theme are you using? Have you tried using a GTK3 theme?

hi, thanks for the reply and sorry for the lack of detail.
this is a window that I feel is “right":

when both of the displayed ones in my first image are what I feel theres something wrong with it. the arrows on the software center, the buttons on Alacarte, etc.
from what you are saying I suppose that has something to do with GTK2/3.
i have not tried using a GTK3 theme and have no idea how to do that. if there's any way to fix it and change their theme I'd appreciate it a lot.
edit: i tried to change the gtk themes through several applications but nothing happened. i suppose it's because i am not using something that specifically is for xfce? (i just installed xfce and before used gnome shell).

To change Xfce themes, you need to make selections in two places:
1. Settings Manager -> Appearance -> Style tab. This will change all of the GTK elements (buttons, text, colours - everything inside of the frame of the window).
2. Settings Manager -> Window Manager -> Style tab. This will change the window frame, titlebar, minimize/maximize buttons).
For GTK3 themes, have a look at the shimmer themes. This will get you started with some.

Looks like the theme is broken because you don't have the required engine for it installed.
What theme is it?
