Hello, you must be tired of me already, but things get even more interesting at my computer. I was playing with the panel tools and looking for volume control (which is missing). So I a few other things like system load monitor, cpu monitor and network monitor. Then I restarted the computer and after logging in the desktop background was missing and windows were missing the borders and minimize, maximize, close buttons. So I cannot move windows and cannot type into some applications. it is unusable and I have no idea what happened. The problem is the same in xubuntu or xfce so I had to switch back to unity. There seems to be nothing in syslog. Where can I see some logfiles maybe to see what the heck is wrong?
I tried apt-get remove xubuntu-desktop and install back again, but nothing changed. I hope somebody knows how to fix that. Thanks.

I have a feeling it may be this issue, but strangely my xserver did not seem to have been updated today when it broke...

Maybe you can delete XFCE's configuration directory and see what happens. Well, instead of deleting, you can change its name, so your configuration isn't lost...

Also sounds like your sessions cache might be corrupted. Before you log in, go to the first console (Ctrl+Alt+F1) and log in to the text session there. When logged in, execute the following commands:
cd .cache
rm -rf sessions
Then go back to the gui login console (Ctrl+Alt+F7) and login and see if its any better.
