Use of picture thumbnails in a program

If I'm writing a programs which works with image files and I want the program to be suitable for the XFCE desktop (more precisely Xubuntu), how should I manage picture thumbnails? Should the program generate and cache the thumbnails itself using imagemagic  or should it invoke the tumblerd daemon? Or maybe there is not much difference? (Actually I don't know how to invoke tumblerd.)
The program is an image organizer.
