I have to use Skype but unfortunately I cannot start it properly. This is my setup:
- Slackware 14.1 x64 multilib
- Xfce 4.10 (bundled with Slackware)
- Skype 4.2.0.11 (from slackbuilds.org)
I've added my user to video group, but all I can see after Skype starting is... nothing, no error, skype process appears but that is all. If I will switch to kde or fluxbox (or any other window manager) Skype properly starts (I have not checked if is it working properly, i.e. voice and video, but that would be an another issue) so that is why I believe it is an issue related to Xfce. What I have noticed so far:
- when I start skype under xfce it does not create anything in ~/.Skype
- if I will change Skype's version to static lib or some older I get either LD_PRELOAD error or same behaviour as with 'official' version
- I have also Ubuntu 12.04 LTS with Xfce on another machine (so it should be called rather Xubuntu if I am right - I really like Xfce so that is why I am using it on everywhere) and Skype works there fine
So can anyone tell me what is the difference between running process under Xfce and any other window manager and what I can do to get working Skype under Xfce? There is nothing being logged in syslog or Skype log in ~/.Skype/Logs or errorlog so I am quite blind now.

Just in case it helps: skype was running fine on my Xubuntu 13.04 and 13.10 as well. So maybe its not an xfce-issue?
(If you need a quick alternative: Chromium with https://palava.tv/ or GoogleVoice/Hangout; or Jitsi (with a special webcam) are working fine, too.)

Unfortunately I have to use Skype (job requirements) and I do not know any other communicator able to use Skype's protocol (afaik it is closed). So my system is capable of running Skype on other managers, Xfce is working with Skype fine on other systems, but my system with Xfce together is failing, any ideas where to start debugging?
Edit: I don't get it, Skype runs fine on EVERY other windows manager I have (kde, mwm, fluxbox, blackbox, window maker and few others) but fails on xfce. Sadly I have to use it and I can't find anything relevant related to that issue so I had to switch to kde, which is ugly and I can't get many things work like they worked on xfce, but at least it's able to run Skype.
Running LD_DEBUG=all skype stops at:

Maybe it's an idea to start asking here: http://www.linuxquestions.org/questions … forumid=14 ? Good Luck!

My suggestion:
download the last 4.2.0.13-static version. Extract it to /usr/local and then just run
/usr/local/skype-4.2.0.13/skype
