I'm using a theme whose default is not to show the application icon in the top corner. I very much prefer to see the application icon, so I have set "show_app_icon = true" in the theme's configuration files.
However, the icon is now too large, occupying so much space that it almost breaks through the top of the window border. How can I prevent this? I have other themes that manage to accomplish this, but I couldn't find how they did it by examining their configuration files.

Which theme are you using? Both the Window Manager theme (xfwm4) and the Appearance theme (GTK)?
And according to the Applications Menu wiki article, you can change the size via gtk-icon-sizes which is usually put in the file ~/.gtkrc-2.0. So you can you post the contents of that file as well?
EDIT: A screenshot might be helpful as well.

The theme is called Trisquel and comes with my distribution, Trisquel. This would appear only to apply to the window manager theme.
These are the contents of the gtkrc-2.0 file:

Sorry, I thought you were talking about the application menu icon. I see that you mean the window icon in the top left. Can you post back a screenshot as well as the themerc file in your theme's xfwm folder?
EDIT: Is this happening with all applications or just some? Also, what icon theme are you using?

This happens with all applications with sufficiently large to burst out of the top of the Window, which is all of them.
Here's the whole theme as a zip file, but here are the contents of the themerc file as well:

Its the menu*.xpm files in your xfwm4 window manager theme - they're too big (22x22). The icon image is filling the space made available by those images. If you resize them all to 16x22, you'll notice that the icon image shrinks to fill that size.

This reduces the icon in size, but now when I hover over the icon it moves to the right and gets cut off.

Using your same theme files, with the 4 menu icon files (menu-active, menu-inactive, menu-prelight, menu-pressed) resized to 16x22, I don't see this. Did you resize all 4 of these icons?

I'd accidentally resized "maximize-prelight" instead of "menu-prelight". I fixed that and restarted my computer, and now it works fine.
On an unrelated note (because I don't want to start a new thread), how can I make the folders on my desktop open in Nautilus instead of Thunar?

Try Settings / Preferred Appliications, Utilities (second tab), under the File Manager setting ("The preferred File Manager (shouldn't be capatilized, IMO) will be used to browse the contents of folders."), change the option from Thunar to Nautilus (assuming you have it installed, otherwise install it first or it will not appear in the list; I only have Thunar and PCMan File Manager installed, so that's what I have in the list - although there is an "Other" option, but IDK how that would work).

If you are asking how to change the default file manager go to Settings - Preferred Applications Utilities tab and change it there.
Seems I crossed MDM's answer, at least we agree ;-).

I have that option changed to Nautilus, but folders on my desktop still open in Thunar.

Hmm, could be a bug, I suppose. I just changed my default to test it and got the expected behavior. Are you using"current" XFCE-related files (4.10? +?) our something old like 4.8?
