Cannot change desktop text colour

I run Arch Linux with Xfce and I've been liking it so far. I am using the Greybird theme.
The problem I have with the theme/Xfce is that the font's colours are nearly unreadable in the fonts chosen by Greybird.
I know that editing the .gtk2.0 files will help this, but everything I've seen so far doesn't seem to work.

I apologise if this is an easy fix, but I have just migrated from KDE, as I wanted a more GTK-like environment without going to GNOME.

Have a read through this. The name of the file in your home directory should be .gtkrc-2.0. If you want to make the change system-wide, make it to /etc/gtk-2.0/gtkrc. For the change to take effect, you need to either change the appearance theme away and back to greybird, or log out and back in again.
