xfce 4.8 (xubuntu) can't cut/paste on desktop, why ?

I just started using xubuntu, I was using ubuntu 10.10 from 2011. Did not upgraded because of the unity crap. xfce is like good old desktop alternative, and I like it. But I have some problems --

1. Can't do anything on the desktop, although mv/cp etc works from the terminal.
2. No thumbnails activated on the desktop, although thunar is doing it nicely (if access the desktop from thunar).

how to fix this ? any idea ??

What do you mean by "Can't do anything on the desktop"? What are you trying to do?

Is xfdesktop running and managing the desktop? You don't by chance have nautilus managing the desktop?

ps -ef | grep xfdesktop
ps -ef | grep nautilus

That functionality wasn't available until version 4.10. The paste button was always grayed out in 4.8 and thumbnails were also added in version 4.10 of xfdesktop.
