4.12 delivery

With 4.12 being 6 months late any time frame for the new release?

OK that isn't very helpful. hmm
Is there a chance to get a more specific answer? Like a list of things which aren't finished yet and are in for 4.12. Or are there only translations missing?
Maybe some tasks can be done by people which aren't regular developers. Changes can be submited in form of patches.
Any code guidelines?

Here is a roadmap for 4.12 but I don't know how up-to-date it is:
http://wiki.xfce.org/releng/4.12/roadmap

In general information can be found here:
http://docs.xfce.org/
and
http://wiki.xfce.org/

I for myself would be glad to help out as good as I can. smile

Re: 4.12 delivery

Well thats an answer.  It may not be the best answer.  My project, the OS/4 OpenLinux Project and many others build our distro's using XFCE and their tools.  4.10 is getting a little behind.  Even KDE has become a very speedy compelling choice, when configured right let me add, so whats the incentive to stay with XFCE.  At least, what features will be present that will be compelling?

I'm not sure why you think there's an obligation on the part of Xfce developers to compete or to offer 'compelling' features for a Linux project looking for a default DE.

Xfce is a good, solid DE that uses less RAM and operates faster on most systems than Gnome or KDE. It's available throughout the Linux world in the sense that anyone who likes it can use it with their preferred distro. A lot of people do like it. If you don't like it, or feel it's 'old hat', then feel free to use a different default DE for your project.

Perhaps you didn't mean to sound that way, but you wrote like someone in a marketplace who wants promoters and advertisers to trumpet why *their* product is better than some *other* product. Open source doesn't have to be like the commercial world.

Re: 4.12 delivery

If I were to speculate I would say that gtk3 is the culprit behind this delay. As for a specific timescale if there is one I cannot find it. I've done some web searching but found nothing.

I just noticed the little icon on my top panel was showing available updates. Looks like 15 files, including xfdesktop4, xfwm4, and several others.

I checked the "Changelog" tab in my updater but "No changelog available" is all I see for those 15 files so I'll wait a few days while I try to learn about the changes in the new versions. (This lack of included changelogs might be the fault of the maintainer of the (Xubuntu Developers?) Xfce 4.10 and/or Xfce 4.12 PPA(s) that I have added to my sources list; I assume that one of them is where my updater found these updates and that they haven't actually hit the main Mint 14 repository yet.)

The "Xfce 4.12 will be released when it is ready for release" answer doesn't bother me, BtW. I have gotten several updated files since initially installing Mint 14 Xfce and adding the two aforementioned PPAs - and they appear to have fixed bugs, added features, or both - which tells me that Nick (et al) has made a point to release bits and pieces when he saw the need. If we were on a "fixed" release schedule, that type of thing might not have happened. I might have, instead, had to wait on the official next release, and to hope that most of the bugs would have been squashed before everything got frozen for testing so that they could adhere to a schedule.

Besides, lol, I know that I like this version. Hopefully I'll like the next one just as well, but who knows?

MDM

Re: 4.12 delivery

@MountainDewManiac: Non roling release tend to backport bug fixes and other maintain the corret release, so those update are mor likely to be simply bugfixed to 4.10.
The 4.11 are for now xfdesktop xfce4-powermanager and toher one or two, integration on sistemd and 2 row for desktop names icons.

Lack of manpower can delay releases too, bit more than one can eat is other and depend on three party lib that introduce thinks that break introduced features and delay for fix these...

Re: 4.12 delivery

The road map has been updated. http://wiki.xfce.org/releng/4.12/roadmap

There's a new line at the bottom which reads: "We're still in the development stage and will start releasing when we think 4.12 is ready."
It doesn't tell us anything but it's nice to know that Xfce isn't going anywhere.

Re: 4.12 delivery

It's not a new update, it's very old:

Fair enough. I don't remember seeing that little notice before though.

Under development phase, part of the text on the chart is "remind everyone of deadlines," lol.
