Hello all,
I also posted this in the Arch linux forums...
did a fresh install of arch last weekend, installed cinnamon and gnome 3.10. I had sound working fine. Since cinnamon would lock up on me (tried the update, didn't work), and didn't care of the new gnome classic, I uninstalled gnome and cinnamon and installed Xfce4. So far, I love Xfce4.10, and everything went smoothly, except after Xfce install, I didn't have sound, where it worked 1 hour prior with gnome and cinnamon.
I've read through the arch wiki's, and forums posts and tried their suggestions, however, nothing seems to work.
the output of speaker-test -c 6 appears to work, but I didn't get sound.
Here is some output that will help determine what's going on, though I'm not sure what to look for and could use some help.

I even ran though the setting default sound card from the Alsa wiki, no help.
I uninstalled pulseaudio and resinstalled and now when I run:
speaker-test -c 6
As speaker test cycles through my 5.1, on front left and front right, I get static out of all speakers, and on rear right, rear left, and center I don't have sound. Ive had this before, and even posted about it https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=130964
I checked to see if I had volti installed and I do not.
Not sure what to check now so I get sound out of the 5.1 properly. any ideas?
I'm new to Xfce, so not to sure what to look for, any and all help is appreciated.
Any and all help/guidance is appreciated.

*EDIT*
Changed subject to reflect 5.1 sound is not working. with speaker-test -c 6, I have sound out of all the speakers at once only when speaker-test cycles to front left and front right. no sound at all when cycling center, rear left or rear right.

Old thread, but I came across it when my Debian Wheezy update last nite, borked all sound.
I read through this guide and my fix was Step Two "Alsa Mixer" where somehow the Master Channel was muted. I know you have looked at that, but the guide goes on to suggest other things. Maybe, something might help.

Have you checked your sound settings to make sure that the input is set for the external microphone port (and that it is not muted)?
In my distro, I'd (left-)click on the speaker icon on my panel, then on Sound Settings, and then on the Input Devices tab. I can mute/unmute (I keep it muted), select which input is used, and - when it is not muted - watch the level on the "meter" jump when I make noise. IDK what the procedure is on (X)ubuntu (I use Mint), but there should be something similar.
That might help in troubleshooting. I'm afraid I can't offer any more useful advice than that. I'm... pretty ignorant, actually, lol.

Please paste in the output of
inxi -A
or whatever your distro uses to get detailed system info.

Thanks, that looks good. Here are the first solutions we have in our Users Manual:
http://www.mepiscommunity.org/user_manu … ection-3.6
You might want to open the Audio Mixer, click on the button Select Controls in the lower left corner and add the headphones control, then make sure it is unmuted and the volume is high. (I am assuming that speaker output is normal)
