Help with thunar-vcs-plugin: authentication fails for subversion

I am trying to use xfce, I like it, but found a real problem that's a deal breaker:
I installed the thunar-vcs-plugin, but whenever I try to do anything with my subversion repo, I get the message "basic challenge rejected" and the operation fails.
Other noteworthy things (maybe):
- I am running Ubuntu 12.04 64bit
- If I use a gnome or cinnamon login shell, start thunar and use the SVN context menu, it works fine
- if I use a xfce session, the SVN context menu in thunar give the error above
- If in the same xfce session I try to access my repo using SVNWorkbench, it works just fine

Any ideas?
