Disappearing cursor

I have two wheezy xfce 4.8 installs and this happens with both of them.  When I hover over an application control or panel icon and the tooltip pops up, the cursor disappears and flickers a bit.  This makes accurate cursor placement confusing.  Compositing is turned off.  Has anyone else experienced this behavior and/or have a clue what's causing it?  Thanks.

Uninstall unclutter

unclutter is not installed.  In fact, I've never heard of it before.  Thanks for trying.  Other ideas?
