[Solved] How to use two monitors?

I have an extra monitor connected to my laptop. XFCE shoes the same screen in both monitors. How can I separate them to have different workspace in monitors? In Ubuntu, I am able to drag window from one monitor to another.

Moreover, in the setting, it is possible to set different backgrounds for monitors, but when I select different backgrounds, only that of second monitor is displayed on both monitors (the same background on both monitors).

Hi etrader,

A couple of general tips.

Check the settings in the XFCE display manager.

Start with either:
Alt+F2 and run "xfce4-display-settings"

or:
Main menu --> Applications --> Settings --Display

I think that arandr would be helpful for you to set things up:

It's quite straight forward.

But I don't think you can set different backgrounds or workspaces. I never tried though.

I installed arandr, but has no feature better than xfce native settings.

The answer was that there is no GUI controller in xfce to do so as gnome. In xfce, it is needed to run xrandr command, but that's OK :-)

Okay great that xrandr is what you are looking for

arandr is just a GUI for xrandr, but it's nice to view how you place the displays to the left, right, above, or below of each other.

Also, on Debian you can't install xrandr directly on its own, so I use arandr package to install xrandr.
