Compile XFCE 4.10 on Linux Mint 201204 LMDE

I'm running Linux Mint 201204 (LMDE) - 32 Bit on a Gateway MT-6840 Laptop, and I'd like to install XFCE 4.10 with Thunar 1.40 versus
XFCE 4.0 and Thunar 1.2.0, because of the problems associated with Thunar Thumbnails, and other issues.

There is a posting on the Linux Mint Forum (XFCE Section) about compiling XFCE 4.10 on XFCE 4.8 systems, with a reference
to the following URL, and the proper documentation on how to proceed with a logical compile.   http://docs.xfce.org/xfce/building

I'm at the second module "xfconf", and I have a problem with an old version of libxfce4util-1.0.  Here is the message:

checking for libxfce4util-1.0 >= 4.9.0... found, but 4.8.2
*** The required package libxfce4util-1.0 was found on your system,
*** but the installed version (4.8.2) is too old.
*** Please upgrade libxfce4util-1.0 to atleast version 4.9.0, or adjust
*** the PKG_CONFIG_PATH environment variable if you installed
*** the new version of the package in a nonstandard prefix so
*** pkg-config is able to find it.

I understand that I need a version >= 4.9.0, but I've not been able to locate an updated version in the Debian "testing" repo's,
or the SID repo's.  How do I go about getting an updated lib that meets the requirements >=4.9.0 so I can continue down the
list and finish my compile?

I've adjusted the ${PREFIX} to be /usr/local for my compile.

Any suggestions would be appreciated so I can use XFCE 4.10 on Linux Mint (LMDE).

Thanks.

Larry

Re: Compile XFCE 4.10 on Linux Mint 201204 LMDE

There's a thread in this forum about installing Xfce 4.10 in Debian Wheezy, maybe it helps you.
Regarding your issue, what if you compile and install the latest version of libxfce4util before proceeding with what you were doing?

Re: Compile XFCE 4.10 on Linux Mint 201204 LMDE

secipolla,
Actually I thought about that for a bit, but dismissed the idea because I was in over my head at that point.
For instance, where would I download the source for libxfce4util from?  Debian Squeeze, Debian Testing, Debian SID,
Debian Wheezy, or some other obscure site that contains what I need?  And what about the Dependencies that
will be required to get this lib to Compile?  I'm sure it will snowball, and before I know what has happened my Laptop
will be in such a state that I'll have to re-install Linux Mint (Debian Repo Version - LMDE) .  And I'd rather not do that.

But, maybe you can give me a clue as to what you might try, keeping in mind I'm rather new at this, and I don't
have a lot of time under my belt with this sort of adventure.  The more detail you can offer the better off I'll
be.

Thanks.

Larry

Re: Compile XFCE 4.10 on Linux Mint 201204 LMDE

According to http://forum.xfce.org/viewtopic.php?id=7413 Xfce 4.10 is in the experimental repository so you might add that repository to your sources.list and install it. Then if some component you want isn't in the repo you compile it.
The sources are at git.xfce.org (use git to download them).

I have done just that to my LMDE/xfce/tracking SID installation.  Enabled 'Experimental' (temporarily), searched 'synaptic' for any upgradeable 'xfce' packages, and upgraded them, then commented out 'experimental'.

gene@zordon:~$ inxi -S
System: Host: zordon Kernel: 3.5.0-3.dmz.3-liquorix-amd64 x86_64 (64 bit) Desktop: Xfce 4.10.0 Distro: LinuxMint 1 debian

I found this post from the 'CrunchBang' forums of much help.  http://crunchbanglinux.org/forums/topic … d-plugins/
Its all functioning just fine.  Only issue was a couple of panel applets that have yet to be updated.
I solved that by compiling the ones I used (and were missing) from source.
I my case 'weather' (nice new one), and 'date/time'.
Tarballs are available here. http://archive.xfce.org/src/panel-plugins

Everything has been humming along nicely smile
