While parole can handle .avi files without any problems (Xubuntu 12.04 and Ubuntu 12.04), it only renders sound when executed in Funtoo. Good, bad and ugly plugins are installed.
Is there anyone playing .avi without any problems in a Funtoo/Xfce4 4.10 environment ? Would like to fix that issue so I could unmerge gnome-player.

You need to install gstreamer0.10-ffmpeg

I've given up on parole. Not only does the name make no sense, I don't think it's ever played a video file for me. Just tried again with some .wmv files. Just audio, no vids. Other players work just fine. Yes, I have just about every gsteamer set installed.

Mellow,
Perhaps you need to disable XV support, Have you tried to run do command?
parole --xv false
You only need to run the command one time.

Okay, that works. Thanks.
Just 'cause I'm not in a great mood today ... could I suggest to the author and/or maintainer that stuff like this should be in an option tab, part of the --help screen, or on the web page. Most folks don't complain --- they try it once and if it doesn't work they shrug and go on to the next app.

I bet you haven't enabled proper use flags.

If you dont mind installing qt, you might want to look into installing smplayer. Its a very nice frontend for mplayer. Ive been using it for years and have never had any issue with it.

VLC for the win, lol. I have no trouble playing - or converting - various audio/video files with it. Full-featured app, too.
