Problem with Calibre

I'm having some goofy problems with the ebook manager/converter Calibre.

Up until now it was working just fine. But, last night I tried to convert some books from epub to mobi. About 1/2 of the books converted fine ... a whole bunch didn't.

I did some googling and found that other folk had similar problems. I, like them, ended up with Calibre reporting an error like:

  ICE default IO error handler doing an exit(),

So, I installed the lastest Calibre ... same problem.

Rebooted into xfce ... same problem.

Booted into a Gnome session ... worked perfectly.

So, any suggestions? I really don't want to have to boot into gnome just for one program.
