Greetings

I'm looking for a new desktop interface to replace Gnome (I'm a huge fan of Gnome v2 unfortunately, Canonical has gotten rid of it in and forced tot the new Desktop Environments which I don't like. Someone strongely suggested I try Xfce, so I will in the next day or two. I will try it on my Mom's laptop first.

She recently bought a new laptop with a low-end processor, so I installed a lightweight distro on it. I forget what DE it has on it now. I looked at the new version (4.8) and I like it. How do I install it through the terminal? I am currently running Ubuntu 11.04 with Gnome (v2).

sudo apt-get install xfce4 will give you a minimal xfce4

If you want to do exactly the same operation using the Ubuntu software centre rather than from the terminal, then you can search for and install "xfce4" from there. (This is described as a "Meta-package for the Xfce Lightweight Desktop Environment." All it does, as far as I can see, is to select and oversee the installation of the basic desktop environment.)
