fonts are squares

I installed xfce 4.8 and when I run startxfce4 the gui starts but all text is nothing but squares. I googled around and found mention of SDL_pango but little else. I started with a Linux From Scratch install, which I've done before with XFCE without issue, but I can't seem to be able to figure this one out. Is there a list of all library dependancies? I'm probably just missing something...

Any suggestions?

Re: fonts are squares

Maybe the DPI value is not correct for your screen layout.
