(Xfce 4.6.2 on RHEL6)
I know I can optionally (automatically) save the state of the desktop upon each logout, but is there a way to save it without having to logout? Specifically, without having to leave the auto-save enabled on the logout dialog?
Ideally what I like is to save my defaults so that no matter how it looks at logout, the default state is restored upon next login. I can certainly do that, but it takes a number of steps:
1. Logout with auto-save enable
2. Log back in
3. Logout again with auto-save disabled
4. Log back in again
Is there a way to just "save now" the default desktop state without logging out?
Thanks!

Xfce 4.7 has a new Session manager settings interface that allows saving the current session.
Xfce 4.6 and prior don't have such a possibility.

Sounds good - If I build from the tarball (taking defaults), will it install along side 4.6 or overwrite it? I'm not at my Linux box right now to see exactly how 4.6 is installed.
Thanks!

It will screw everything up.
It is possible to install it in a different prefix (your home directory, /opt, etc.) and you will have to start it with the right environment variables (LD_LIBRARY_PATH, PATH).

So, if I want to upgrade to 4.8 (since it should be released soon, IIRC), I need to just 'make uninstall' all the 4.6 packages and install 4.8? Or is there a better way?
Thanks.
