Semantic desktop for Xfce using file tagging?

I am interested in some kind of semantic desktop for Xfce that uses file tagging.

Basically, I've got hundreds of files that I'd like to organise by keywords (not just photos or audio files, but PDFs of academic papers, source code, etc.). I don't want to bother creating a structure with symbolic links, as that's too cumbersome.

Is there some kind of tagging plugin for Thunar that can do this?
