Starting yesterday for no reason I've begun to have trouble with xfce on my Acer AspireOne running Debian Squeeze. The main issue is that everything is extremely slow. The hard drive light is lit all the time (really), menu reaction time is on the order of ten seconds or more. Many of the icons on the menu bar have stopped working (ie terminal, shut down) Gnome is functioning fine which is what I'm in right now.
I want to completely remove xfce4 and then re-install it. Using aptitude I have removed and purged xfce4, but when I
# locate xfce
there are remnants and a lot of them.
How can I remove everything including config files so that I can truly start with a fresh xfce4 install?

Not sure about your package manager, but you can find locally created files saved in ~/.config/ and ~/.cache/

Some additional info ends up in ~/.local. In addition ~/tmp may contain some traces as well (I occasionally see some leftovers from XFCE session manager).
