I built XFCE from source, according to the order I found here:
http://www.xfce.org/documentation/requirements
The error message when I tried to startx:
(II) Module "ddc" already built-in
(II) Module "i2c" already built-in
(II) Module "ramdac" already built-in
/usr/local/bin/startxfce4: X server already running on display :0
Agent pid 17544
/usr/local/bin/xfce4-session: error while loading shared libraries:
libxfsm-4.6.so.0: cannot open shared object file: No such file or
directory
Agent pid 17544 killed
according to find, there is a file called libxfsm-4.6.so.0, located, I think, at /usr/local, but I'm not sure if that the fiule that'
s supposed to be missing. I've been working on this for three and a half hours, and I need to leave it alone. One thing I might try is ennabling kdm or gdm, but I can't imagine why that would help anything.
Maybe I'll just give up on the latest and just apt-get whatever version of XFCE is in the Lenny repos. :-(

Here's where it gets weird. Installing whatever version of XFCE is the default for Lenny (I'm pretty sure it isn't the latest version) seems to have fixed my problem. Installing XFCE from apt-get seems to have fixed whatever was wrong without overwriting the later version I installed. So there ya go!
