Hi there, I've just rebooted after installing xfce 4.6 using the graphical installer. My question is..how do I actually use it? (still using 4.4 and synaptic says xfce-session is 4.4.2). I am extremely new to linux, and only just about managed the dependency satisfying side of things during the installation process. I'm running Xubuntu intrepid at the moment. I installed to the default location offered by the graphical installer. Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks.

look this post
So if I install say..gnome, then uninstall xfce 4.4 and the recently installed 4.6, then reinstall 4.6 using the graphical installer it should work? I don't really like the sound of the problems the guy had in that thread!

That's the thing .. Install another desktop environment and then uninstall everything and re xfce to do the installation in graphical mode.

Hi, thanks for replying. Does everything work ok for you now? Is it worth the hassle of upgrading yet do you think? Can you now change folder's icons in Thunar? Also I use XFapplet to use gnome applets on my xfce panel - will these work in 4.6?

Ok I managed it by installing over gnome then selecting xfce as default session at login screen. Buggy context menus, xfapplet doesn't work properly, and the xfce menu looks like the huge freaking gnome one now..

Look, the best way is through a clean system. Yesterday I went to reinstall Debian without GDM or Gnome or anything, just the base system, just installed Openbox, xterm, Leafpad synaptic and search for required dependencies and then install Xfce 4.6 and it works much better ..
