new windows are maximized by default - can I change this?

Hi all, not sure exactly where this post should go, so..here it is

I've been using Xfce for a long time now, I just love how light and fast it is (although Thunar seems to be a little buggy, in my Xubuntu 8.10) but there is one feature I can't stand and that I don't know how (or where) to change it.

Sometimes, when a new window is created (I would say this happens mostly with Evince), like when I double-click a PDF file, the app window is maximized by default, and if I drag it, it will be (sometimes) resized. Sometimes the resing doesn't work, and I have to do it by hand.  But even if it worked all the time, the fact is that I found this behavior to be really annoying, and I would love to make it stop.

The problem is that I can't find a place to set/unset this kind of behavior.

any hints?

many thanks

It seems like evince or the window manager have some kind of memory: If you open a document from thunar again, it remembers the last window size & position you used with that document. As for previously unopened document, the window setting of last time evince is used is applied.
