Make cube appear

Truly newbee - I've read many posts and downloaded or enabled all the stuff to get a cube to show up on desktop, to no avail. Can someone point me to a step by step, I'm really excited about getting these cool features avtivated. Should you have the pager enabled or not?  Do I have to have Beryl?  Do I need something in autostart?

I'm running Xubuntu 7.10 on a Compac P3 1000 Mhz CPU w/392 Mb of ram. I'm using a riva tnt video card w/128 mb ram on it. Seems to run smooth and fast, but no cube. Any help would be truly appreciated,  R
