Re: problem with graphical installer

Sorry you're having issues with the Graphical Installer. Couple of basic questions:

- what Xfce install version are you attempting? Where did you get the Installer from?
- Have you confirmed that your Installer download was totally AOK prior to usage?
- have you cross-checked your overall "Environment variables" and paths?
- did you absolutely confirm that you have "pkg-config" installed and its path is accurate and set?

Finally, since I'm also using Xfce as my primary DM with Debian Etch have to ask- Why are you using the graphic install method where there is already a complete Desktop meta-package for Xfce readily available..??

Regards-

Re: problem with graphical installer

"

i got it from sourceforge.net and downloaded fxce4-4.4.1-installer.run

"- Have you confirmed that your Installer download was totally AOK prior to usage?"

i was pretty sure it was aok  how would i check to see if its not?

"- have you cross-checked your overall "Environment variables" and paths?"

mmm no idea what u mean by that? if your talking bout the dependencies i istalled them via apt-get

"did you absolutely confirm that you have "pkg-config" installed and its path is accurate and set?"

wat is pkg-config  cuz i know i didnt istall it but if the graphical installer installs it then i dunno

Re: problem with graphical installer

Thank you for the clarifying responses- very helpful. To continue in the spirit of helpfulness, I'll make the following comments, observations, and recommendations:

1. In the world of Open-Source "freedom" has a diversity of meanings/realizations; you're definitely free to do whatever you want with your system and ignore directives, recommendations, suggestions, etc.

2. In reviewing your responses I'll note:
  a. Nothing out of ordinary regarding source for Graphical Installer (Sourceforge). However, I will note that the Xfce 4.4.1 environment DOES break a number of goodies and panel plugins which have not been well maintained (but are neat nice-to-haves regardless). For me there is nothing in the 4.4.1 upgrade that is compelling to forego some of the plugins I currently utilize-enjoy..
  b. As regards environment variables-paths, these are aspects of your system and user working environments that set basic location references or environment indicators to be used by a variety of utilities, desktop services, etc.. Be assured these items ARE important; your lack of knowledge/appreciation for them is OK (your prerogative, experience level)- but they are GNU/Linux aspects you should be very aware of..
  c. as for pkg-config these are a set of references and "services" that establish reference items for pointing to and resolving Library module dependencies/items; especially utilized in software ("package") installs

3. Considering the above info, I'll make these recommendations:
  a. abandon using the Graphic Installer approach to install your Xfce environment. Simply, you do NOT need the 4.4.1 release at this time. Additionally, the Xfce4 environment is fully-readily available in Etch already.
  b. You have a GREAT deal of exploring to undertake for basic-introductory aspects of: Linux, Debian Etch, Xfce4, and the associated utilities, applications, and infinite configuration possibilities
  c. Recommend you do a standard Debian Etch install of Xfce4 utilizing Aptitude, NOT apt-get. Apt-get is not the recommended install, software-pkg management tool in Debian. Does it make a difference- Yes! particularly in dependency management, resolution, and future Debian package directions... Simply:

$su
Password: blah-blah
#aptitude install xfce4 xfce4-goodies xfce4-appfinder

will provide you with a fully and correctly installed Xfce 4 desktop environment. Which will present you with innumerable opportunities to explore: Linux, Debian, Xfce, and everything else FOSS.

Of course you're "free" to accept/reject any of the above- your choice. Enjoy!
