ATI acceleration problem (solved)

OS: KateOS 3.2
ATI Radeon x800XL

I installed KateOS and updated all my packages from its repositories.  But I'm still having problems with no hardware acceleration.  As far as I can tell i have transparency turned off (since the option isnt available from Windows Tweaks).  I'll my suspicion as the problem.

from xorg.conf

Section "Device"
    Identifier "VESA Framebuffer"
    Driver "vesa"
    #VideoRam 4096
    # Insert Clocks lines here if appropriate
EndSection

Do I need to install ATI's proprietary drivers (which requires Xfree86 whatever that is)?  Or would one of the alternatives be better.  I'm just looking for 2d acceleration openGL/3d acceleration is not a big concern for me.

Re: ATI acceleration problem (solved)

My old ATI Radeon 7000 is not in the list. Don't you know, will it work with this drivers?

Re: ATI acceleration problem (solved)

I  too have a Radeon 7000 and I'm afraid that there is no good news for us regarding drivers.  I spent a long time searching and was not successful in coming up with a real driver just a few changes in xconf that do almost nothing.

Radeon 7000 users are out of luck....although it is a very old card.
