Mixer does not save its settings

Hi,

I am having trouble with xfce4-mixer.  After logging in to the xfce session, all mixer sliders are at the zero position, meaning I cannot hear any sound.  I can increase the volume on the master and PCM slides and then sounds is audible. After a restart of the computer, mixer has "forgotten" the settings and all sliders are set to zero again.  This is really annoying.  How can I get mixer to remember the settings?

install alsa-utils.
