As I installed XFCE 4.4 from http://software.opensuse.org/download/X … inux_10.1/ all worked fine. But XFCE starts only correct as root. Starting it as a non root user with startx I only get a grey screen. Starting it as a non root user with startxfce4 it seems to work, but all windows have no borders so I can't move or resize any window. Also a little bit strange is the behaviour of the Xfce settings manager. Chosing the "Windows manager" icon it says: These settings cannot work with your current window manager (unknown). First I thought this is a problem of the $WINDOWMANAGER environmment variable, but it is set systemwide to "/usr/bin/xfwm4". What I don't understand for the moment is, why xfce4 works great as root, but not as normal user. Maybe I have to change some permissisions, but which?
TIA,
Ralf

Check if xfwm4 and xfdesktop are running. The grey screen would seem to show that xfdesktop isn't starting and xfwm4 handles this window borders.
