xterm main menu icons show square, no title

Just upgraded my fbsd system and reinstalled xfce4 and all packages, everything seems to work except the main icon panel for running apps (window buttons) shows a square followed by "..." and no title for running xterms.  The xterm windows show the proper title, which changes when xtset is run.  The panel shows other icons (thunderbird, firefox, gimp, darktable, etc.) as before.  The xterms are started with "-name trm-1" etc.  Hovering over the square shows the name/title as expected. I have another panel to start additional xterms and it displays the appropriate icon and hovering over it shows the text "Xterm  Xterm".  This all seems consistent, but prior to this upgrade the xterm buttons for running xterms displayed the xterm title.  Is that because there was no icon for xterm, and now there is?
