Displaying non-standard characters in xfce4-terminal

Running xfce4-terminal 0.8.10 on XFCE 4.16 under Slackware 15.0.

I have an application which prints out data in an xfce4-terminal as follows:

rbpid?N??Mtj??Xy?Mtj??Xy?Mtj??Xy?Mtj??Xy?Mtj??Xy?Mtj??Xy?Mtj??.Xy?Mtj??Xy?Mtj??Xy?Mtj??Xy?Mtj??Xy?Mtj??Xy?Mtj??Xy?Mtj??X.y?Mtj??Xy?Mtj??Xy?Mtj??Xy?Mtj??Xy?Mtj??Xy?Mtj??Xy?Mtj??Xy.?Mtj??Xy?Mtj??Xy?Mtj??Xy?Mtj??Xy?Mtj??Xy?Mtj??Xy?Mtj??X.nowhere.com

All those question marks correspond to non-ASCII character - like e.g. the Euro symbol.

Can an instance of xfce4-terminal be configured so that such characters are printed out properly?

Under the preferences there should be a way to switch character encoding. I'm not sure of the exact path with your older version.
