thunar strange behaivor, ignoring folder.jpg in some folders

hi,

I'm using folder.jpg pics as folder icons. Recently thunar started to ignore the folder.jpg pics in some folders, i.e. shows the default folder icon, but for some reason it displays other folders using the folder.jpg pic. But as time went by thunar continued with this weird behavior, more and more folders are being displayed with the default icon.  I've tried restarting my pc, still the same. Today I've noticed that a few other folders are being displayed with the default icon but a few others still show the folder.jpg pic as icon.

Any ideas what is causing this? What can I check?

I'm using folder.jpg pics as folder icons.

Are you using the customized thumbnailer for folders?

Any ideas what is causing this? What can I check?

Which distro are you using?
Which Xfce version?
Maybe post back your ~/.xsession-errors log file.

Are you using the customized thumbnailer for folders?

~/.local/share/thumbnailers/folder.thumbnailer

i don't have this file and there is no thumbnailers folder in the share folder.
However there is a tumblerd process visible in the process manager

Which distro are you using?
Which Xfce version?
Maybe post back your ~/.xsession-errors log file.

I'm using MX Linux, xfce, debian linux 11 bullseye
xfce ver: 4.18
gtk ver: 3.24.24
kernel: 5.10.0-32-amd64

The ~/.xsession-errors is huge, 415k lines, could I just do a search for some specific word?

I would look for tumblerd or folder-thumbnailer errors.

You an also run tumberld in debug mode to see if anything suspicious is happening.

Does the folder-thumbnailer write to a error log file?

You an also run tumberld in debug mode to see if anything suspicious is happening.

this command:

G_MESSAGES_PREFIXED= G_MESSAGES_DEBUG=all $(pkg-config --variable=libdir tumbler-1)/tumbler-1/tumblerd

gives me this error:

Package tumbler-1 was not found in the pkg-config search path.
Perhaps you should add the directory containing `tumbler-1.pc'
to the PKG_CONFIG_PATH environment variable
No package 'tumbler-1' found
bash: /tumbler-1/tumblerd: No such file or directory

I tried

whereis tumbler-1.pc

returns:

tumbler-1: /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/tumbler-1

but the folder /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/tumbler-1 does not have the tumbler-1.pc file

Not sure what to do at this point. Perhaps it would be simpler to reinstall thunar?

Try this instead:

MESSAGES_PREFIXED= G_MESSAGES_DEBUG=all /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/tumbler-1

returns:

bash: /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/tumbler-1: Is a directory

Are you using a tumbler.rc file?

I do have a tumbler.rc file in the /etc/xdg/tumbler/ dir, but not in ~/.config

/etc/xdg/tumbler/tumbler.rc has this part:

[DesktopThumbnailer]
Disabled=true
Priority=0
Locations=
Excludes=
MaxFileSize=0

I tried changing Disabled=false and restarting thunar, still does not display the folder icons

the problem is gone!   I did this:

[DesktopThumbnailer]
Disabled=true

then killed tumblerd process
killall thunar

restarted thunar and now it shows the folder icons.

However the output of

MESSAGES_PREFIXED= G_MESSAGES_DEBUG=all /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/tumbler-1/tumblerd

is still the same, or at least the last lines:
