Debian testing Xfce4 here.
Just a question. Has that way to position additional icons on the desktop changed Xfce 4.18 > Xfce 4.20 changed?
In Xfce 4.18 the positioning goes like that
Beginning left top down and then next column.
Here https://www.xfce.org/download/changelogs/4.20 I found this note in chapter 'Desktop Manager (xfdesktop)'
Add new YAML icon position saving code
but no further explanation.

Here is some more info on using yaml. I don't believe the actual logic for placing icons on the desktop has changed.

I don't believe the actual logic for placing icons on the desktop has changed.
I still do have the impression, that something has changed.
Have an additional Debian 12
and testing in VBox's for reference.
In both cases a thunar windows is open on the right side of the screen. In thunar I have 3 dummy text files 1 .. 2 and 3 and the usual folders.
I do a left mouse click on those text files and some of the folders (one by one), hold the left mouse button, drag the object just out of the thunar windows and release the mouse button on the desktop.
In Debian 12 (Xfce 4.18) the object move over to the left side of the desktop (the behavior I have seen over the years with Xfce!) and in testing no movement to the left side, but staying near the thunar window ...

Sorry I meant the general icon placement logic. However, there have been significant changes to the code to support wayland. It's quite possible this is a manifestation of ans aspect of the change and possibly a bug/regression.
When I test your scenario, I notice that the first file stays where I drop it, but the remaining ones line up in order as per 4.18.
Feel free to create a bug report.

Feel free to create a bug report.
Thank you for having a look. So I am not seeing a spook here. Think, I wrote a bug report on Xfce some years ago.
I'll leave that topic open for the moment and add a link to the bug report ...

PS.
Found one report here
https://gitlab.xfce.org/xfce/xfdesktop/-/issues/362
but that is not the same, what I see here, so I'll write an additional report.
Added later 1 h 57 min 36 s:
Report is out.
https://gitlab.xfce.org/xfce/xfdesktop/-/issues/369
Added later 11 h 32 min 34 s:
Just receives an email from the developers
'Expected new behavior!'
I'll close that post now.
