Forced to log in twice every time

Hello,

I installed Xubuntu 24.04 on an HP laptop. From the beginning, the OS would boot to a black screen about half the time, forcing me to hard shutdown. I added the kernel parameter "nomodeset" to the GRUB config file, and that fixed the problem. But it caused an even stranger problem to begin.

Now, whenever I boot up the computer, it takes me to the lightdm greeter screen as it should. But when I log in from there, takes me right back to the lightdm greeter screen and I have to log in a second time.

The files ~/.xsession-errors and ~/.xsession-errors.old are timestamped about a minute apart. My most recent ~/.xsession-errors.old ends with the following lines:

X connection to :0.0 broken (explicit kill or server shutdown).

(xfce4-notifyd:1985): Gtk-WARNING **: 18.42.38.715: cannot open display: :0.0
Invalid MIT-MAGIC-COOKIE-1 key
Cannot open display.

Also, I will occasionally be suddenly logged out of my session and returned to the lightdm greeter screen. This has happened when I attempted to change my desktop wallpaper using the right-click menu, and when I was using Thunar. I suspect that the tumblerd service is what is triggering these weird forced logouts, but I can't reproduce that problem on demand, so it's hard to test my suspicion.

This is getting a bit irritating. Does anyone have any suggestions, either to help fix this weird double-login problem or to fix the original boot-to-black-screen problem (since working around that using the nomodeset kernel parameter appears to be what's causing the double logins)?

Thanks for any help you can give me!
