I would like to create a tar file and be prompted to enter a filename.
This is what I have so far.
tar -cf %F

The thunar-archive-plugin was made for this specific purpose. Does it not work properly for you?

I got the tar ball. got as far as here.
~/Downloads/thunar-archive-plugin-0.5.2$ make
make: *** No targets specified and no makefile found. Stop.
The more I look into this, the more complicated it is.
Why does the plugin have to be built?

Which distro are you using? It should be in it's repository. Search for "thunar-archive-plugin".
