Kitty colours

Hi.  When I open xfce4-terminal, it opens bash in my home directory.  If I do ls -al ($LS_OPTIONS includes --color=auto) all my files are nicely coloured according to my preferences, which are all listed in $LS_COLORS.  I believe this is due to dircolors being run against my ~/.dir_colors file in ~/.bashrc?

When I open kitty terminal, it opens bash in the same home directory.  If I do ls -al, only a few files are coloured, and they are coloured differently.  Also, $LS_COLORS is empty.  It is the same bash, using the same .bashrc.  Why is this happening?
