chromebook

I have a chromebook and enabled the linux option. This works fine and gives me a penguin terminal. I can run various applications from the terminal. All good.

Now, I want to run a desktop ... xfce4 is my choice. I installed with, I think, the files I need. But, I can't get it to work.

From the terminal I type: startxfce4

The errors start with: X server already running -- not starting a new one
    GTK-warning cannot open display: wayland-0
xfce4-panel:     libxfce4ui warning .... ICE I/O Error
xfce4-panel: Failed to connect to session manager ...
   Segmentation error (core dumped)

Am I missing a file for all this?

Okay, thanks for the pointers. The linuxinsider story probably answers my question:

The built-in Crostini partition cannot handle Linux desktops. It runs Linux commands through the command line interface or CLI and launches installed Linux apps by clicking their launcher icons.

Crouton, as in “Chromium OS Universal Chroot Environment,” goes beyond that limitation. Basically, you must replace Crostini with Crouton.

Fortunately I have very little on the chromebook. I'll wipe it later and give this method a go.
