Hi All. I'm using Salix 15, and wish to install Wine, but cannot find it in the repos. Is there perhaps a repo that I need to add?
Failing that, I would like to know in general how to install a package from a .txz or .tar file. I downloaded wine-8.21-x86_64-1sg.txz from WineHQ and extracted the contents to wine-8.21-x86_64-1sg.tar. I then moved both files from my Windows 10 host to the Salix 15 VM, so both files are now available. What are the next steps?

Usually the source packages will give you the instructions and a list of dependencies but I wouldn't go down this path if I didn't have to.
This may be of some help but I would ask on the Salix or Slackware forums to be sure. I have no Slack experience myself but I did find this.

Thanks for the link. After a lot of searching, I must conclude that wine is not in any of the Slackware or Salix repositories . I did find a huge number of tutorials for installing it from a download, which greatly helped to confuse me more than I already was . Since I don't have a pressing need for it at the moment, perhaps it would be best to leave this task for now.

Aha! Yes, thank you, that shows the same as what I have listed in the package manager. But now I understand that wine-staging is actually the wine package--but it is kinda like the beta branch. There isn't a stable branch in the repo. So, okay to use the staging branch?

It should be fine. It's usually where changes and new features hit first.

So I installed the package from the repo; it is wine 7.9, which is pretty old (2022-05-23), but I guess it can't be updated until/unless the repos get updated. I also looked at the contents of the .tar file of 8.21 that I had downloaded, but couldn't find any clear instructions that I felt confident in following.
Anyway the installation from the repo was successful, but when running (from the terminal) either the included notepad.exe, or the winecfg, both produce pages and pages of error messages in the terminal, after which they do open successfully. I have no idea where to go from here; I've been spending far too much time reading on the winehq site. I may have to leave this project aside for now--it's just a little bit too complicated for a Linux newbie .
