thunar 4.18.6-1 thunar-volman 4.18.0-1 versus systemd 254

I run up to date archlinux x86_64.

After a recent update systemd 253 --> 254 I noticed that I could no longer get ny flash drives to get mounted. Under 254 the drive partitions appeared in the side pane and the devices were created, but not mounted. Under 253 the partitions were mounted.

I run slim+openbox with seshreg as the session manager. Up to now I have not needed any authentication agent. Reading the polkit page in the arch wiki indicated I might need one so installed xfce-polkit.

With that running I am able to get the mmcblk0 partitions mounted after I give the root password.

Is this expected behaviour? If yes how did it ever work? I haven't changed any thunar settings or run commands?
