Show Windows From All Monitors weird new behavior

I'm running Xubuntu 22.10 with xfce4-panel 4.17.3.  This is a desktop that I've been running for a good 2-3 years now and updating along the way.  With this latest release I noticed that the behavior of "Show Windows From All Monitors" is different and unexpected.  I typically use a single monitor on this system.  With the optioned checked if you move a window to a different workspace, the icon for the window remains in the current workspace panel (!) and it doesn't go away until you switch over to the other workspace!  That is not how it used to work.  Another problem I've noticed that it causes is when you have Firefox open on one workspace and you open a URL from a different workspace.  In that case the Firefox window doesn't appear on the current workspace like it used to.

This is just weird.  It never behaved like this for all the years prior and I'm not sure if this is an intentional change or a bug or just some cruft on my system causing it.  I tried removing and replacing the panels and it doesn't change anything.

I can workaround this problem by unchecking "Show Windows From All Monitors", but then when I hook up a second monitor I don't see that monitor's window icons in my panel if I'm running the second monitor without panels.

Is there something I can temporarily rename in the config files to try and debug this?  Maybe some old config causing problems?

First update to the latest dev version of the panel (4.17.5), there have been fixes to this between 4.17.3 and 4.17.4 in particular.

Thanks, I didn't know about that repo.  Can I just install the deb for xfce4-panel?  I hate to try and update all those packages and break something else and then not be able to roll everything back.

You probably can, but in this case a global update would be both easier and better. Basically you'll have Xfce 4.18 as it will be released in three days

You mentioned that "there have been fixes to this between 4.17.3 and 4.17.4 in particular".  Do you mind pointing me to the specific changelogs that document the particular fix?

Search for commits titled "tasklist: ..." between 4.17.3 and 4.17.4.

The only one I see that might be the issue is this one.  I also searched the bug tracker (which I didn't know about until now) and don't see any bug reports about it.
