Applications Jump to Second Monitor When Attached

Hi - this is more of an annoyance than a problem, but none the less...

When I attach my secondary monitor (via HDMI) to my laptop, any open application window jumps to the secondary monitor, including conky.  I have configured the second monitor to be positioned above the laptop monitor in display settings, and also set the laptop monitor as "Primary" in display settings.

My graphics are:

Graphics:
Device-1: Intel UHD Graphics 620 vendor: ASUSTeK driver: i915 v: kernel
    arch: Gen-9.5 bus-ID: 00:02.0
Device-2: IMC Networks USB2.0 HD UVC WebCam type: USB driver: uvcvideo
    bus-ID: 1-6:4
  Display: x11 server: X.Org v: 21.1.4 with: Xwayland v: 22.1.4 driver: X:
loaded: intel unloaded: modesetting, vesa dri: iris gpu: i915 resolution:
    1: 2560x1440~60Hz 2: 1920x1080~60Hz

Any thoughts on what I can try?

Re: Applications Jump to Second Monitor When Attached

Which version of Xfce and xfce4-settings?

Have you tried setting the laptop screen as primary when in multi-monitor mode? (Settings Manager > Display)

Re: Applications Jump to Second Monitor When Attached

Do you see the following options when clicking on the "i" icon next to the Primary Display switch as shown in this image:

Yes, just as it is above with a check-mark next to each one.

Re: Applications Jump to Second Monitor When Attached

Click on the word "Configure" next to Xfce4-panel and the panel properties dialog will display. What is "Output" set to?

Re: Applications Jump to Second Monitor When Attached

I'm at a loss. This should work. I attached an HDMI-based monitor to my notebook, set it above the laptop display, and depending on which monitor was set as primary, the programs launched there and the panel displayed there.

Can you create a secondary test account and see if you can replicate it there (with a clean config)?

Re: Applications Jump to Second Monitor When Attached

OK...
1. Created a new profile with external monitor on top - still same issue open and new windows jump to ext.
2. Changed to have ext monitor on right - worked as expected, open and new windows stay on primary
3. Created a new user and configured external monitor on top - work as expected, open and new windows stay on primary.

So, what config do I need to delete?

Re: Applications Jump to Second Monitor When Attached

While not logged in to Xfce (also make sure that xfconfd is not running) and rename the displays.xml file located at ~/.config/xfce/xfconf/xfce-prechannel-xml/. When you log back into Xfce it will recreate that file. Then test again. Note: your existing display profiles will no longer exist and you will need to re-create them.

Re: Applications Jump to Second Monitor When Attached

Wasn't sure how to do this:

While not logged in to Xfce (also make sure that xfconfd is not running)

So, booted off a live USB and renamed displays.xml
Re-booted, attached ext monitor, and configured to be on top... no good.
Open windows (and conky) still jump to ext. monitor on plug-in.
Interestingly, some new windows open on ext monitor and some on laptop.
When one opens on ext monitor, I bring it laptop, close/re-open and it opens on laptop.

Here's what I have in my displays.xml:

Re: Applications Jump to Second Monitor When Attached

So to summarize, it works fine with the new test account you created, but not with your current account, even after you've re-created the displays.xml file.

Lets look at your window manager settings:

xfconf-query -c xfwm4 -lv

Also, on a fresh login, lets see what processes are running:

ps -ef | grep $USER

Also, I did a little more careful recording of behaviour

Saved profile of Laptop as primary set to bottom, external monitor set to top

  1. Plug in external monitor via HDMI, open windows on the laptop jump to external monitor

  2. Open a new window

    1. Spreadsheet/text opens on screen where last used, if available (I think this is expected behaviour, and explains why new apps open on external monitor as that's likely where last used)

    2. App (browser) opens on screen where last closed, if available (I think this is expected behaviour, and explains why new apps open on external monitor as that's likely where last used)

  3. Unplug external monitor HDMI

    1. Open windows on external monitor jump to laptop and are mostly visible

    2. Open windows on laptop get shifted far down, with only title bar visible at the bottom of the screen.  Need to drag the windows up from the bottom of the laptop screen to see content.  It’s like everything is shifting down one screen, but there’s no screen below the laptop.

    3. Minimized windows from the laptop, when opened, are shifted far down with only the title bar displaying at the bottom of the screen

Saved profile of Laptop as primary set to left, external monitor set to right

  1. Plug in external monitor via HDMI, open windows move up a bit but remain on laptop

    1. Open windows on the laptop move up a bit but remain visible on laptop

  2. Open a new window

    1. Spreadsheet/text opens on screen where last saved

    2. App (Browser) opens on screen where last closed

  3. Unplug external monitor HDMI

    1. Open windows on external monitor jump to laptop, but are shifted far right, with only 1/4 inch of the window's right side showing.  Need to drag the windows left to see content[/]

I did the same tests on a live USB with Endveavour OS, and the only difference is, when opening an app or document, it always opened on the laptop screen.

Re: Applications Jump to Second Monitor When Attached

I'm still at a loss to explain why this is happening on your system. I can not replicate it on mine and it doesn't make sense. I would suggest creating a bug report to see if one of the developers can have a closer look.

Re: Applications Jump to Second Monitor When Attached

So, a bit more investigation and I suspect the issue may have something to do with my monitor, Philips Brilliance 272P.  This monitor has a built in docking station for power, usb, sound, networking, display...

I have a second laptop that is the same model as in post #1, running EndeavourOS, and external monitor behaviour is similar.
I have a third laptop old Acer Aspire 1410 running Manjaro (un-updated for 2 years) with different Intel graphics

Graphics:
Device-1: Intel Mobile 4 Series Integrated Graphics driver: i915 v: kernel
Display: x11 server: X.Org 1.20.3 driver: intel unloaded: modesetting
  resolution: 1366x768~60Hz
OpenGL: renderer: Mesa DRI Mobile Intel GM45 Express v: 2.1 Mesa 18.3.2

And again, plugging in the external monitor gives similar behaviour.

@ToZ, does this still seem like something I should open a bug report on?  Perhaps, since I get very different behaviour on a Windows laptop.

I would still say yes. Something is going on here and maybe one of the developers can help to identify the cause.
