Idea: bind a key to show a list of application windows on press
Reasoning: reduce the up/down back and forth mouse movement to and from the screen edge
But: yes that other DE does something similar but failed to reduce mouse travel: a simple list focused around the pointer vs windows spread around the whole display

You can middle-click the mouse (three finger tap on touchpad) on the desktop to bring up the windowlist (assuming windowlist is enabled in the Desktop Settings, menu tab).
If you have the windowmenu plugin added to the panel, you can bind:
xfce4-popup-windowmenu -p
...to any keyboard shortcut to make it popup at the mouse cursor. YMMV though, as depending on the version of Xfce you are using, the previous command might not work. For more info, see: https://gitlab.xfce.org/xfce/xfce4-panel/-/issues/297.
