[SOLVED] Custom Keyboard Shortcuts for Audio Playback Control

Hello all,

I want to set custom keyboard shortcuts for control audio playback like next & previous title (the function keys of my Thinkpad X250 work fine for volume control, but there are no dedicated keys for playback commands) for my XFCE desktop. In my XFCE settings there is nothing available, although there is the option to configure something, but my Linux knowledge is not sufficient to make some headway here.

So far I haven't found any helpful tutorials on the web

In Gnome Shell it is possible to assign a custom key combinations for a preset audio command like next / previous title / pause / stop.

I am running on Fedora 33, although the distribution shouldn't matter much.

Hello and welcome.

Which media player(s) are you looking to control this way? Most will have some sort of interface for allowing remote control of them, you just need to find those commands and assign them to shortcut keys.

Most of the times I use Audacious and I found a way to assign terminal commands to keyboard shortcuts (audacious -r / audacious - n e.g.). That is a helpful workaround. It would be though nice to have global keyboard shortcuts no matter which program I use, sometimes I use VLC for videos for example or a different audioplayer.

Maybe that is something to be achieved by sending command to pulseaudio?

I don't think its something that pulseaudio handles - it just manages sound, not media players. If the players support the MPRIS standard, you could use that. But I'm not sure that all of them do. There is some information at this Arch Wiki page on how to accomplish that.

playerctl looks interesting, and its in fedora's repositories.

great idea, I could just set it up with playerctl and it works fine with all kinds of audio players. You really helped me here )
