Multiple Monitors / Separate Desktops

Hello all.  For several years, I've been using Xubuntu in two-monitor configuration that uses separate Xscreeen displays.  Monitor one uses DISPLAY=:0.0 and monitor two uses DISPLAY=:0.1.  This has allowed separate desktops with independently functioning workspace switchers.  This is, to me, indispensably useful for both day-to-day and development tasks.  In Xubuntu 16.04 it worked gangbusters.  In 18.04, somewhat less so.  In 20.04, it's completely dysfunctional.

While this abandonment of a great feature is a disappointment, I can, for the time being, get around it by staying on 18.04 on my multi-monitor system.  I also understand that as Wayland comes online this framework will simply become obsolete and meaningless.

Unfortunately, there doesn't seem to be any support separate desktops on multiple monitors, both configured as :0.0.

So... I'm kicking around the idea of implementing it myself.  It's been twenty or more years since I last did anything like this (would have been mucking about in FVWM).  I know I can figure things out by poking around, but it would be helpful to receive some pointers like, "you should start here.."

Is there any documentation or diagram describing the organization of the XFCE code?

Is there any reason I shouldn't do this?  (For example, does this functionality already exist and I'm just too embarrassingly dense to discover it?)

Thanks for any input.

Re: Multiple Monitors / Separate Desktops

I am totally ignorant on these issues, but I have the impression that you are a little bit wrong. I think this is more a xorg thing than an xfce thing.
Take a look at:
https://doc.ubuntu-fr.org/xrandr
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Config
https://www.linuxsecrets.com/archlinux- … randr.html
https://www.linuxsecrets.com/archlinux- … figuration
I think that you may find something that will help to solve your problem.

Yep, strictly an xorg thing!

Maybe your 20.04 is actually using wayland.

I've seen no mention of change and use it extensively with spice, x2vnc, x2x and more
