Renaming desktop icons kind of messy.

xfce 4.12. debian 10

I drag and drop a app menu entry to the desktop.
Right clicking and trying to rename the  foo icon i get
a small dialog with the name  foo.destkop and renaming
1) if i change foo.desktop to foo will change the icon
name but also the icon image into a text image
    that opens libreoffice.
2) if i change foo.destkop to zoo.destkop nothing
will change and the second time i give the
renaming command the correct app name
will be displayed  foo  (plain with no suffix)
and the link will work and i then can rename the
    icon.

Re: Renaming desktop icons kind of messy.

i rename my desktop icons (and everything else) using a command line shell in ~/Desktop inside a command line terminal (xfce4-terminal) using commands like "mv" and "rename" and have never had a problem.

Shouldnt a GUI desktop dont guide us to the text-ui for trivial use cases?
